Samburu-Isiolo Conservation Area (SICA)

SICA covers a unique 525 km² ecosystem including the Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba National Reserves. These reserves support rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, and Somali ostrich, alongside elephants, lions, and cheetahs. The ecosystem hosts over 450 bird species.

Conservation efforts focus on balancing environmental protection with community development, addressing challenges from climate change, including increasingly severe droughts and floods. The area is home to pastoralist communities whose livelihoods depend on the health of the ecosystem.

GEF-SGP supports community conservancies, wildlife corridors, and sustainable rangeland management to ensure coexistence between wildlife and pastoral communities in this critical northern Kenya landscape.
