Lake Bogoria Ecosystem

Part of the Kenya Lake System World Heritage Site, Lake Bogoria is a biodiversity hotspot with over 370 recorded bird species across six main vegetation zones. The alkaline waters rich in blue-green algae sustain large populations of flamingos.

Despite its ecological value, the area faces pressures from soil erosion, water abstraction, deforestation, and pollution. GEF interventions focus on community-led conservation, bioenterprise development, and catchment rehabilitation across the 32,000 hectare reserve.
